Irmo-- Albert Franklin Howell, born February 17, 1927, to Albert Jerry and Edna Smith Howell, Al Howell never knew his father, who died before he was born. After graduating high school in Apex, NC, at age 16, he joined the Navy at 17 and remained in service until the war ended. He was a distinguished military graduate of UNC, having served in the AIR ROTC. After graduation, he served 7 years in the Air Force reserve. From 1960-65, he was Executive Director of the Chamber of Commerce in Mt. Airy, NC. He began his career in the textile industry in 1966, which eventually brought him to Columbia SC, where his varied work included consulting, industrial training, and Contributing Editor to Bobbin Magazine. In 1998, he retired as Director of SEAMS. Al taught Sunday School at St. Andrews Baptist church for over 30 years, served as Deacon and on various committees. He and his beautiful wife raised three daughters, each successful in her field. Surviving family members are his loving wife, Ruth Britt Howell; daughters, Pat Conrad, (Tom, deceased), Sheri Haymore (Clyde) and Meg Howell; grandchildren, Joel Edge, Amy Lowrance (Kenny), Carrie Haymore, Franki and Skylar Deckert; great-grandchildren, Chloe and Andrew. Please join us in celebrating the life of a loving husband and Dad at 2 p.m. Wednesday, December 30, 2015 at St. Andrews Baptist Church, 230 Bush River Road, Columbia, SC 29210, entombment will follow in Bush River Memorial Gardens Mausoleum with military honors. Dr. Ronald “Dee” Vaughan will be officiating. The family will greet friends from 12:30 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the church.
